Inspired By Suzanne Perron

This past Friday, I attended Career Day in Dallas. I heard from respected and knowledgable fashion experts from around the United States. Although they all had great things to say, Suzanne Perron truly captured my attention because of her incredible experiences and expertise. She graduated from LSU and then attended FIT for one year. After years working under women such as Ana Sui, Vera Wang and Carolina Hererra, she was ready to go back to her home in New Orleans. She has a passion for creating beautiful gowns with intricate and unique designs. She opened her own bridal shop where she designs gowns to fit her client, both in measurements and personality. Her techniques and tips as well as her passion for construction inspired me to determine my strengths and keep learning. Here are some photos of her designs as well as a video about her new book, “Designing in Ivory and Lace.”

“Career Day” Here I Come…

This Spring semester I took Apparel Design 1. In this class we learned pattern making and designed our own dress for a 35-55 year old career woman. after many sketches and brainstorming I designed a straight dress with a peplum and ruffle collar. I chose a subtle black and white pin stripe for the bodice and the peplum and a cotton black twill for the skirt and the ruffle. With many many hours of sewing, ripping out and sewing some more… I finally finished it. We turned it in a couple weeks ago and our teacher chose the most quality dresses to go to Career Day. Career Day is an annual fashion show competition that takes designed garments from Universities in the United States. “This is the longest-running and largest fashion career event of its kind in the U.S.! For over 40 years, nearly 1,200 students and faculty attend annually. The program provides career opportunities and insights; hands-on access to companies offering internships and entry-level jobs; interaction with industry leaders, mentors and role models; and most importantly merchandising and design competitions with cash awards and scholarships.” I was chosen with about 6 other students in my class. It is a great oppurtunity and I am excited to attend!

The Nautical Mod Romantic

Emily Henderson is the winner of Design Star season 5 and has her own design show on HGTV called “Secrets From a Stylist.” It is by far my favorite show on HGTV. Not only because she is amazing at what she does, but she has the best sense of style. She is basically my style icon. She mainly wears bright poppy red and deep ocean blue every chance she gets. Every piece she wears has interest and something unique that makes you stop and look closer. That is the same with her interior design skills. She takes classic pieces and mixes them with quirky and unique antiques to create a timeless and fun space. She has her own blog that I just discovered where she gives styling tips and much more: http://www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com

Here are some great examples of what she wears on her show:

She also recently modeled a Gap tote bag. She is just so cute!

Here are some Emily Henderson inspired looks that are fun, classic and unique:

Signature Style…

Rachel Ashwell is an interior designer who started a signature brand called “Shabby Chic” in 1989. She uses soft pastels and wrinkled linens to create her imperfect but stylish look. Rachel Ashwell not only has a signature style through interiors but also in fashion. She rarely wears anything but jeans and a white top. This has become her signature look. This is a very simple, non fussy style that completely works for her and her lifestyle.

My mom and I recently visited her Bed and Breakfast and were in awe of the beautiful but imperfect oasis that she created.

Rachel Ashwell’s fashion choices coincide with her “shabby Chic” look. Her white top and jeans give her a unique style that people will remember.
